In tonight’s episode of “A Drink with The Hurricane” I’m going to share one of my favorite tools for outside sales people and that is THE EFFECTIVE USE OF PROMOTIONAL ITEMS. There are so many different types of items you can give, but I’m not going to talk about WHAT to give. After all there are clipboards, pens, coffee cups, magnets – it just goes on and on! One may be more effective than another. I personally like clipboards. I used to give ice-scrapers in the wintertime; those were very well received. BUT remember the purpose of giving away these items is TO GIVE US A REASON TO SHOW UP AT THE REFERRAL SOURCE THAT DAY!
We all know that once we’ve visited the place, we’ve toured the facility, we may have done an in-service, we know the key players, and they have our brochures. If you go in there without A REASON FOR BEING THERE from their point of view, (of course, we know the REAL reason is to get a referral!) they’ll lose interest. You need a reason for showing up there week after week. THIS IS REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT!
If you belong to a home health company or a hospice company and you have the Medicare guidelines, DON’T BE AFRAID TO GIVE AWAY PROMOTIONAL ITEMS! You are allowed to give gifts as long as they don’t exceed a ten dollar value. If it’s over that amount, it’s considered a kick-back. You can’t give the social worker a twenty-five dollar gift card to Red Lobster. That’s considered a kick-back. HOWEVER you CAN give them a pen or a coffee mug. So you need to work within the realm of your legal limitations.
I suggest stopping by once a month to drop off a promotional item. Go to the people you know and tell them about the brand new promo items you got in and how you wanted to be sure they got one. Their reaction will usually be, “How thoughtful!” Then chat about nothing important. Do what I call THE SANDWICH APPROACH. Schmooze for a little bit and then in the middle add in some sales. “By the way, I just got a couple of great caregivers that just came off a case that are available and I’m trying to find work for them. If you have anyone being discharged that could use help, you can have one of my best caregivers.” Then finish with the schmooze. “I hope you enjoy the movie you’re going to see” or whatever you were talking about before. So the filling of the sandwich is about your company and usually that’s when they realize they actually do have a referral. They may ask you to come back when the person is being discharged or they may ask you to go back and talk to the person while you’re there.
Repeat this in every potential office. Schmooze, sell, schmooze. THAT’S HOW WE MARKET! If I went to these people and didn’t have an effective open or a reason for being there, I wouldn’t have gotten the business.
